The Trent Excalibur men's soccer team takes on Queen's University on Friday, September 19, a match that is set to be a pivotal moment in their season which has seen one of its strongest starts in recent years, achieve a 3-1 winning record, wins over top-ranked teams, and two offensive players setting scoring records at Trent, in the OUA and U Sports national organization.

"Our men's soccer program has embraced a transformative mindset this year," says Grant Purdy, head coach of the Excalibur men's soccer team. "From day one, the players have bought into a growth philosophy, focusing on accountability and team confidence. We've taken it one match at a time, and the results speak for themselves. Friday will be another big test in front of our home crowd."

With nine points (3-1), the Excalibur are sitting fourth in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East standings, just ahead of Queen's in fifth with seven points (2-1-2). Having played one more game than the Gaels, an Excalibur victory on Friday will be a key element to maintaining momentum in their push for the playoffs.

The team's strong starting performance this season has come against top competition, including a season-opening win over Nipissing, who finished third in the East last year, and a victory against defending OUA champions Ontario Tech.

Two offense players have had standout performances in Excalibur history and in provincial and national standings. Third-year Forensic Science student-athlete Leo Frans (Champlain College) is currently one goal away from tying the all-time Excalibur scoring record (14), while rookie John Moncada (Lady Eaton College), Business Administration student, has scored six goals in four games, leading the OUA and ranking second nationally in U Sports. One more goal would see Moncada match Frans' record for most goals in a debut season (7).

"There's a real buzz at Trent right now. Our Excalibur teams are off to a great start and competing with the best in the OUA," said Nathan McFadden, director of Athletics and Recreation. "The men's soccer program has shown incredible growth and is poised to make a strong run for OUA playoffs. Friday's home game is a chance for our community to come together and support them as they chase history."
